Meditation as mental filing

I talked about meditation with Serbian teacher.
Then he expressed meditation as "mental filing".
He explained meditation that at first,"finding what I think about" "what ideas I have" "how I feel".
Second, he "put them on other side", and just repeat it.
It's like organizing a messy room.

When I tried meditation, I focused not to think, vanish my thoughts.
But now I realized the most important thing is "find" my feelings, thought, ideas.
By finding them, I can organize my inside.
